Dying, death and bereavement are significant life events. Throughout history, religious traditions have provided narratives about their meaning. Science and scientists, have provided a counter-narrative. Yet other informed voices have entered the discussion, including the modern hospice and palliative care movement and the disciplines of anthropology, medicine and psychology. Dying has become an observed phenomenon. Within the dying process itself, patients often experience profound altered states of consciousness, giving rise to powerful spiritual, mystical and transformative experiences. These phenomena affect both the dying person and their carers, the latter sometimes participating directly in the experience. Drawing from his direct experiences with the dying and bereaved, and from the wisdom of eastern, western and shamanic spiritual traditions, Brendan will discuss the profound implications these mystical experiences have for how we understand death and dying, what happens beyond death, and how we can use these insights to inform and enrich the lives we live now.
Brendan previously trained as a social worker, his intuition assisted him in the roles of family and mental health practitioner and latterly, in the field of hospice, palliative care & bereavement care.
