Join Gerrie and Nicoletta for a day visiting the sacred landscapes and the ancient centres of power and earth energies of Avebury.
Avebury stone circle in the county of Wiltshire, is the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world and although it is a UNESCO world heritage site, you are free to roam.
The dauntingly massive stones are yours to touch, lean on, hug and tune into! We will of course be doing some distinctly College activities - a meditation within the stone circle and some scrying on the patterns of the stones themselves to enhance your intuition.
Avebury stone circle is part of a larger prehistoric landscape containing the older still West Kennet Long Barrow and the mysterious Silbury Hill. Silbury Hill is the largest and perhaps most enigmatic of all megalithic constructions in Europe. Completed in around 2400 BC, it apparently contains no burial. Its purpose is still a mystery. A possible explanation will be given by Gerrie.
West Kennet Longbarrow situated to the south of Silbury Hill is a long earthen bank with a series of stone chambers. There is some mystery about how it was used and although human remains were found, the site was almost certainly the focus of other rituals that were important to the society who built them.
Many believe barrows to be a door to another world - a liminal place of intense spiritual awareness. Nicoletta will lead a guided meditation at the site.
There is plenty to explore in these ancient landscapes and as we walk around the stone monoliths we will visit four large beech trees with the most magnificent roots which snake down the embankment.
In amongst the green you will notice bright ribbons tied around the branches and roots, messages, little notes, requests for health and happiness and offerings to the spirits of these ancient lands and trees. It is a connection to our ancestors, who were also drawn to these sacred sites. Tying that ribbon is a little act of magic and we will be taking time during our trip to do the same. Bring your own ribbon and message if you wish or Gerrie will have some ribbons for you to use.
You will be given time to explore during the day, so you might want to visit the Alexander Keiller Museum, Avebury Manor and Gardens or St James’ Church. (entrance fees not included).
