The fire of inspiration, poetry, healing and divination

The fire of inspiration, poetry, healing and divination

On Imbolc (2nd February), we celebrate the birthday of Mother Brede. Brede or Brigid, which means bright, is the triple Irish Goddess of Fire - the fire of inspiration, poetry, healing and divination.

In Celtic legend Brede is the daughter of a druid and it is said that she was born with a flame reaching out from the top of her head connecting her to the universe. Now, as we know, each Sabbat celebrates a phase in the relationship between the Goddess and the Horned God or Earth and Sun.

This is the time of year when the Goddess begins to wake up after winter, enticed by the light of the sun god who is growing stronger. The warmth of the Sun God - now a passionate young man - starts sending power to fertilise the earth to germinate the seeds.

So, in nature we see the approach of the Goddess in the first spring flowers and the God in the growing daylight hours of the sun.

The Goddess and God represent the lovers of the tarot card of choice, which means we too have to find new energy and determination for our plans, to enable us to renew our lives. We must leave behind old ideas and thought patterns, to enable us to live better in the future.

Imbolc is about new beginnings. It is also a time of cleansing and purification - spring cleaning our homes, minds and bodies to prepare us for rebirth in the spring, learning to understand and discover ourselves again.

This is also the season for spring cleaning, although the meaning may have been forgotten. When sweeping out the house take your actions clockwise to get rid of the past and ask your guides to help get rid of redundant thought patterns. It is a time for purification and renewal after the darkness of the winter.

Imbolc is a festival of light and fertility once marked by large bonfires all around the country.

"So we light out candle to Mother Brede

As She awakens the seeds in the spring.

To inspire us in all our words and deeds

Lighting Her flame of love within us all".

Happy Imbolc!

With bright blessings, Valerie Pitts - College Crystal Tutor
