Photo of Dr Nina Kokkinen

Dr Nina Kokkinen works as a research doctor at The Donner Institute for Research in Religious and Cultural History. She has published several books and edited volumes related to art and esotericism, such as Occulture and Modern Art (Brill 2013) and Spiritual Treasures: Esotericism in the Finnish Art World 1890–1950 (Parvs 2020). 

Kokkinen has also curated several art exhibitions based on her research, exploring esotericism, occultism and mediumistic art. She has recently curated a retrospective of Aleksandra Ionowa, which was held at the Gallen-Kallela Museum in spring 2025. She has also co-edited a non-fiction book on Aleksandra Ionowa's art and life, based on research. 

Kokkinen is currently working on a project with the Finnish National Gallery / Ateneum Art Museum on Northern women, art and esotericism.
