What started as a psychic reading at The College of Psychic Studies later became a career as a psychic mediumship tutor at this very same College. In this article, first published in College magazine Light, Senior College Tutor Gary Wright shares the beginning of his own psychic journey...

I feel that I am incredibly lucky. Not only do I work at The College of Psychic Studies as a consultant and tutor, teaching mediumship to an advanced level. I also teach an introductory class for psychic development. Through this, I am always reminded of my first experience at the College when I arrived as a student. I didn't come into the building to be a professional medium, but because of a life changing event I could no longer deny that I was having psychic experiences.

Students come to my introductory class for many different reasons. Some know they have some psychic ability and now have the time to take a closer look at it. Some people have no idea what they are experiencing and need help understanding how they can integrate this into their lives. I know once they find themselves at The College of Psychic Studies, they will have started on a journey towards developing their psychic abilities. I believe you discover the College when you are ready. I don't live far from it myself and must have gone past it for years without knowing it was there until one day I spotted it while going past on a bus and felt I should go into the building. I booked a sitting with a psychic but it was 10 days before I could get an appointment that suited me.

During that time, I experienced doubts as to why I had booked the appointment and what it would achieve as I had not been to a psychic before. When I went for the sitting, it took place on the third floor of the College building where, co-incidentally, I now do most of my sittings. I had only just sat down and the lady said to me: "You want to know if you should study here don't you?" Although I was not consciously aware of it I realised she was probably right. She explained to me that I had mediumship abilities and encouraged me to pick a course that suited me.

At the end of the sitting she said to me: "Congratulations!" When I asked what for, she told me I would work at the College one day. I was uncertain but as she had already told me many other accurate things about my life, I thought I would consider training at the College which I then went on to do, studying mediumship and trance.

Once inside The College of Psychic Studies, you start to feel the magic of the building. One of the key points of the College is community. Established in 1884, it's been bringing like minded people together for all this time.

Each week my students get to know their psychic ability - to meet it, to understand it and to enjoy the journey without expectation of the end result. One of the most important things is to get them to relax. This is the starting point, as the biggest obstacle to psychic ability is fear. I get my students to sit with each other to experience changes in energy. We consider how often we have an intuitive experience as part of our daily life. I help them connect with their natural abilities and start to make them aware of how to contact their untapped psychic potential. Once we start consciously working with our psychic ability, it expands. I try my best to make each class a fun experience with the enjoyment of discovery.

So my teaching days are filled with moments of seeing people surprising themselves with their gifts. Some have gone on to work professionally as mediums. Many of them discover a creative potential that they take into their daily lives. Their psychic ability has become a natural part of who they are as individuals.

Seeing this happening with each student is something that I know I will never get tired of...
