If you find yourself drained after a busy day out, absorbing the moods of everyone around you, or feeling like the world is simply too much, you are very likely an empath, or what's often called a highly sensitive person. How to know you are a highly sensitive person? If you are a student at The College of Psychic Studies, or have been guided to read this post, we are 99 per cent certain you tick the box!
Why sensitivity needs support
Being highly sensitive means we have a heightened capacity to feel, perceive and connect. But without the right tools, that same sensitivity can leave us overwhelmed and depleted, carrying the emotions, thoughts and moods of others. Because of this, we might avoid crowds or busy places. While more 'robust' types seem to work a room with aplomb, we find ourselves overstimulated, wishing that we could retreat into a cocoon of calm and quiet. Happily, there is a way for us to be in that busy room without said cocoon...
Crystals act as natural stabilisers and harmonisers for the human energy field. Worn, carried in a pocket, or strategically placed with intention, they can offer real, tangible support, helping us empaths and highly sensitive people find protection, clarity and balance amid daily overwhelm.
Stones that can support empaths and HSPs
Different crystals offer different kinds of support, depending on what we need in the moment. The black book of commonly used crystals for empaths and highly sensitive people include:
- Black tourmaline: Widely regarded as one of the most protective stones available, black tourmaline is often used to create an energetic boundary against negativity and unwanted outside influence, making it a popular choice for us empaths navigating crowded or draining environments.
- Smoky quartz: Known for its grounding properties, smoky quartz can help anchor an overstimulated nervous system, gently drawing excess or chaotic energy down and out of the body.
- Amethyst: A calming, high-vibration stone, amethyst is often used to soothe anxiety and mental overwhelm, while also supporting spiritual clarity and intuition - qualities that us empaths and sensitives tend to have in abundance!
- Selenite: Valued for its cleansing qualities, selenite is frequently used to clear stagnant or absorbed energy, both from our self and from other crystals, making it a useful tool for daily energetic hygiene... another essential for us empaths and sensitives.
- Labradorite: Sometimes called a stone of protection for empaths specifically, labradorite is thought to shield the aura while enhancing intuition, helping sensitive people stay open without feeling exposed.
- Rose quartz: A gentle, heart-centred stone associated with emotional healing, rose quartz can support HSPs in processing absorbed emotions with self-compassion rather than overwhelm.
Crystals as energetic allies
Any good crystal teacher (like our very own Nicholas Pearson!) will tell you that lists like the one above only offer a rough guide. We are all so different and have our unique strengths and challenges. Different crystals are destined for each of us! Finding a crystal that can support us as a personal energetic ally as we go about our daily life is a joyful process of testing, working with the above-listed stones as your basic guide. We might:
- Choose stones that nourish and strengthen the aura, creating a buffer against outside energies
- Work with grounding crystals to calm an overstimulated nervous system
- Practise simple techniques of psychic shielding and spiritual hygiene to prevent emotional and mental overwhelm
As you work with different crystals, you will notice how they affect your energy and state of being differently. You'll also come to learn the various situations in which the stones can serve you best.
Learning to recognise your own sensitivity
One of the best ways we can find a perfect crystal for us as empaths and sensitives is simply learning to identify what we're experiencing. Not everyone who feels overwhelmed by others' energy realises they're an empath or HSP, and understanding this about ourselves - as well as how to disentangle our own 'stuff' from the 'stuff' of others, is often the first step toward finding real relief.
