Since my late teens, I have been exploring various streams of metaphysical thought and esoteric sciences as a way of gaining a deeper understanding to one of those age-old questions that has long been pondered by humankind: "What is the meaning of life?" and "What is my purpose in this lifetime?" Part of this exploration has taken me into the realm of the Akashic Records, the vibrational database that contain the imprint of every past, present and future moment in all existence.
What are the Akashic Records?
The Akashic Records, also known as the Book of Life, are a hidden library that contains the record of not only every single soul's journey, but also thought, emotion, intention, and possibility; a mystical realm that holds the key to understanding our past lives, our future potentials, and the deepest truths of all existence. It is a vast cosmic memory that holds every action, thought, emotion and intention of every single soul in every incarnation; an energetic field or vibratory database. As such, it is an ever-expanding, ever-changing consciousness that reflects the inter-connectedness of all beings.
Who 'invented' the Akashic Records?
The Akashic Records are an ancient concept that are not specific to one single culture or philosophy, but rather connecting all. Numerous philosophies from around the world have presented a form of the Akashic Records teachings:
- The ancient Indian Upanishads speak of a subtle web that connects all living things through vibrations in the cosmos.
- In Ancient Egypt, the Hall of Ma'at was where our life deeds were weighed against the Feather of Truth after death.
- The Tibetan Book of the Dead, Bardo Thodol, describes how, upon death, the consciousness encounters the reflection of its own past actions so the soul's journey is not erased or forgotten, but rather recorded in a universal memory.
- In the Christian Bible, there is mention of the Book of Life that contains the names and deeds of those destined for salvation.
- The Kabbalah's Book of Life and Book of Remembrance contains records of human actions and spiritual deeds across lifetimes.
Here in the West, we have two main characters who have brought forward teachings around the Akashic Records: Helena Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society, and American psychic Edgar Cayce, the 'sleeping prophet'. Edgar Cayce said: "Each soul in entering the material experience does so for those purposes of advancement towards that awareness of being fully conscious of the oneness with the Creative Forces."
The Akashic Records today
Today, it is interested to note that advanced scientific areas of study, such as holographic theory, quantum entanglement and zero point energy fields, are coming up with very similar concepts that ancient teachings such as the Akashic Records have long held. Taking the holographic theory as an example, just as a holographic plate contains the whole image in every fragment, this means that every point in the universe contains the whole. Or as Hermes Trismegistus recorded in the Emerald Tablet: "As above, so below, as within so without".
How the Akashic Records can help us
Not only have I sought to understand what the Akashic Records are and where they are located, but also how we can access the information stored within. I wanted to take this knowledge a step further and find out, probably more importantly, what we actually do with the information once it has been obtained.
The Akashic Records are expressions of divine intelligence to which we are all deeply connected. This means that when we connect with the Akashic Records we are tapping into a higher frequency or vibrational reality that has the potential to expand our own consciousness. When our own consciousness expands, then we are able to gain a deeper understanding of not only the world around us, but also our interconnectedness as a whole, providing answers to questions such as: "What is my purpose in life?" and "Why did we incarnate at this particular time?" These are questions which, I think, many of us are pondering these days.
