Charlie Morley has spent two decades guiding people into their shadow - the parts of themselves they've been taught to hide – and helping them find gold there instead of shame. A bestselling Hay House author, two-time TED speaker and teacher of lucid dreaming and shadow integration, Charlie trained for years within the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism before bringing his work to audiences everywhere from Oxford and Cambridge to the NHS and the Ministry of Defence. In this post, he shares what first drew him to shadow work almost 20 years ago, why so much of what passes for it today falls short, and what it really means to integrate our darkness rather than bypass it. Over to Charlie...
Almost 20 years ago I was introduced to a practice that changed my life forever. This practice, and the revolutionary perspectives on the mind that it offered, gave me more confidence, more authenticity and access to a vast source of psychological energy, which I found within myself. It was called shadow work.
The shadow work 'lite' of TikTok
In the past few years, this powerful practice has become popular with the TikTok generation, spawning a whole new movement of people ready to change shame into acceptance and fear into love.
In theory, anyway. So much of the shadow work being offered is either so diluted that it doesn't actually lead to any significant shifts or it's so theoretical that you end up saying to yourself, 'Yeah, but how do I actually do it?'
This is not true shadow integration. The shadow workshops that I teach aim to fill that gap with powerful psychological practices, most of which are science‑backed with real‑time, real‑life results and all of which are safe to do and have a significantly positive impact on mental wellbeing.
So what is the shadow, exactly?
The shadow is the part of us that's made up of all that we hide from others: our shame, our fears and our wounds, but also our divine spirit, our blinding beauty and our unexpressed talents. There are two aspects of the shadow: dark and golden. Shadow work involves shining light into the dark caves of our unconscious mind to reveal the gold that is stored there.
I believe that we have been looking for that gold in all the wrong places. Our true power is found not in the saccharine sweetness of 'spiritual bypassing' – overlooking our unenlightened human condition – but in the dazzling darkness of our shadow side. The light that we will find there is brighter than we can ever imagine.
Just as a single candle can illuminate a cave that has been dark for millennia, so too can shadow work practices can bring radical illumination to your unseen potential.
Never has there been a better moment to integrate our darkness and own our golden light. The safest and greatest gift we can give the world today is an integrated shadow.
Lightworker x shadow worker
The term 'lightworker' has been used for decades to describe those on the path to self‑awakening through love and light. I'm a big fan of love and light, but life isn't always that way, and until we learn to work with the rest of it, we will never be whole.
And so I am proud to be part of a new breed of spiritual practitioner. We call ourselves shadow workers. The world needs shadow workers now more than ever. So, let us move into the freedom of shamelessness, the place beyond duality, beyond right and wrong, the place of Rumi's field. I'll meet you there.
Charlie Morley has been teaching shadow work and lucid dreaming at The College of Psychic Studies for more than a decade, guiding students into the dazzling darkness and back out with the gold they came for.
