Susan Sontag said: 'All photographs are memento mori'; Latin for 'remember that we die'. This livestream talk explores the power of photography as memento mori, and also as a component of spell-craft.
Photographs act as our reminders of a person, a memory, a moment... but in capturing the still of a person, do we capture the essence of them? And can we capture their spirit, or a fragment of it, truly? In a culture guided by the capacity to document through videos, gifs and photographs, do we realise the power of our practices, to gaze into another through the moments we record?
This online talk includes:
- Daguerreotypes & Victorian mourning photography
- Cultural beliefs around photography
- Photography as a means to capture the soul
- Photos as a representation of a person on which to focus magical intent
Book now and join Tia Price to examine the world of photography through a spiritual and magical lens.
