Join Dr Emily Vincent, tutor at Oxford University, for a livestream talk exploring how Victorian women writers used the Spiritualist ghost story to navigate maternal grief.
As Victorian women writers of the supernatural carved out space and time to both mourn and create, the Spiritualist ghost story offered a unique and even "scriptotherapeutic" way of writing and processing grief, particularly relating to the loss of a child.
This livestream talk will explore how Victorian women writers, including Florence Marryat, Margaret Oliphant and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, used their Spiritualist ghost stories as a means of navigating maternal grief and bereavement.
