In this online talk, Jungian psychologist, author, and educator, Joanna LaPrade, Ph.D., handles an important dilemma of our times — how to be with the inevitable darkness in life.

When we search within, we find the underworld – lost connections, failed enterprises, haunting memories, insecurities, and, above all, our deep selves. It is where we go when life darkens, and we lose our footing.

Today, the underworld is poorly understood, even disparaged. We have abandoned the depths to prioritise an unblemished, positive life. Viewed as pathological and approached with solution-focused techniques, we banish both the terror and the richness of the inner world.

What we are left with is an attitude that prioritises authority, strength, fixing, and willpower. The heroism needed to face the abyss has been reduced to a single hero, Hercules, the mighty Greek hero who embodies willpower, conquest, solutions, and the colossal strength to slay the world's demons. Enchanted by Hercules, we try to bend darkness to our will.

Our ways into the underworld have become narrow and unimaginative. And so, we limit how hardships can help us become who we are meant to be.

Inspired by her book, Forged in Darkness: The Many Paths of Personal Transformation, Joanna's engaging and imaginative approach to the inner world draws on the work of C.G. Jung and Joseph Campbell to unite self-discovery with mythology, inviting you to notice how your life may resonate with different underworld journeys.

There are many ways to imagine our encounters with suffering and our deep selves that can encourage us to treat these moments elemental to our growth and transformation.
