I am not one to align to labels, but 'lightworker' is one I warm to, as it gives those of us who work in the spiritual arts – from psychic mediums and astral travellers, to channellers, tarot card readers and more – a sense of belonging and alignment of purpose.

A lightworker is a person who feels called to bring healing, compassion and greater conscious awareness into the world, using their gifts, presence and actions in service of personal and collective growth. So, are you a lightworker? Here are some of the signs:

1. You feel a deep need to help others

Many people liken spiritual work to a 'calling'. It's as if something inside of you is beckoning you to apply your unique abilities to help others. You do it because you love it but most importantly because you've seen how it can transform lives and have a positive ripple effect on others.

You may have also noticed that others pick up on your helping vibe too. You're likely the one people come to you for advice, healing, comfort and problem solving. But watch out that you don't over-give, or you may burn out. The most powerful lightworkers know how to sustain their energy, which helps direct it in the right ways for the benefit of others and themselves.

2. Your lightwork feels natural

When I left the corporate world after 25 years in the wrong career, I felt I'd shed a heavy mask I was never meant to wear. Now, showing up authentically as a psychic coach and medium, that heaviness is gone and my work feels like a joyful and natural extension of myself.

Regardless of whether you've been aware of your lightwork since childhood or developed it through training as an adult, it's likely you simply know it's 'you' living your soul's purpose, and there nothing is more natural than that.

3. You're different

As a child, I talked to imaginary friends, learned languages with little effort and rubbed mud on my face. These days, I talk to my guides, speak the language of Spirit and forest bathe. None of these things are considered 'normal' and I hid them for a long time in a bid bit to 'fit in'. That all changed when I realised it was making me feel unhappy about who I was and the life I was living. Now I know that my difference is my power.

Any fears you may have about letting your lightwork shine are simply thoughts that are asking to be set free. Start by honouring and loving the human side of yourself that's afraid of judgement and rejection. In time you will integrate these thoughts into the whole of you so they can become your biggest supporters and strengthen your lightwork instead of holding you back.

4. You feel a connection to 'something bigger'

Lightworkers know that there's more to life on this planet. Call it Spirit, God, Universal Energy or whatever you like, we're consciously aware of our connection to something bigger and feel it in our everyday life across all of time and space. It reminds us of who we are, where we came from and where we will return. It gives us comfort in uncertain times and a sense of wonder in the joyful ones. It knows no bounds and teaches us how limitlessness we all are. It's this energy that's the source of all lightwork and lightworkers everywhere connect with it, each our own way, to channel it for the benefit of all.

5. You have 'special' abilities

Lightworkers are sensitive beings and use their five main senses alongside their 'clairs' (e.g. clairvoyance, clairaudience, etc) and other senses (scientists now believe there are over 30 (Super Senses: The Science of Your 32 Senses and How to Use Them by Emma Young (2021, Jay Murray Press) to help others.

How to be a lightworker in a sceptical world

Lightwork is unique to the lightworker. This makes lightwork hard to measure and quantify. When you compound this with a sceptical society, it can make it hard for lightworkers to fully trust in their abilities and spiritual connection. This is often one of the biggest challenges lightworkers face.

If you're struggling with trust, start by honouring how you feel while gradually taking practical action. That could include gathering evidence of the impact of your work, speak kindly and supportively to yourself, regularly calming your nervous system and taking time to feel grateful for the signs leading you on your path. And don't compare yourself to others. Everyone's path is different and where you are is exactly where you are meant to be.
