Lilith originates in the ancient Near East as a demonic figure, yet has found new appeal in the modern world as the first woman and a feminist icon, associated with dark forces, but also with freedom and confidence. Her story spans millennia, shifting from ancient demon to modern icon of autonomy, making her a compelling image through which to explore both the shadow and the sovereign self. Cartomancy – the use of cards for prediction and self-discovery – draws on figures rich with symbolic charge, and few carry more layered meaning than Lilith.

Meet your tutor, Dr Steven Muir

Dr Steven Muir is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at Concordia University of Edmonton, where he taught biblical studies, early Christianity in the Greco-Roman world, and the methodology of religious studies. His research spans healing, ritual, pilgrimage, mysticism, and the history of magic and the occult in the ancient world. He has published widely on early Christianity and comparative religion, including contributions to The Routledge Encyclopedia of Ancient Mediterranean Religions and Early Christian Ritual Life (Routledge).
