In this livestream talk, Dr Amy Hale will explore the diagrammatic imagery of British artist and occultist Ithell Colquhoun (1906-1988) within the wider context of occult diagrams, exploring Colquhoun's various magical projects, and the influences that shaped these practices.
Ithell Colquhoun's archives contain a variety of enigmatic magical studies and experiments, many of which might be categorised as diagrams. These pieces are schematic in nature, intending to visually represent esoteric principles in both an experimental and instructive way, suggesting both states and methodologies.
In terms of Colquhoun's wider visual corpus, they represent her interest in the intersections between esotericism and occultism, and empiricism and scientific methods.
This online talk will also explore their place within the wider international tradition of symbolic didactic and allegorical imagery found throughout esoteric visual history, including alchemical emblems, heraldry, Freemasonry, Indian Tantra, Kabbalah, and the Golden Dawn, to cite just a few examples.
This event will include a discussion and Q&A with Amy, facilitated by College of Psychic Studies curator and archivist, Jacqui McIntosh.
