Reflections on Ethelwynne M. Quail

Join The College of Psychic Studies' Curator and Archivist, Jacqui McIntosh, for an in-person conversation with Barrie Gasson, son of artist Ethelwynne M. Quail, whose extraordinary work is celebrated in this year's College exhibition. 

Ethelwynne M. Quail (1903–1947) was a South African artist and sculptor associated with the Theosophical movement. Her self-taught practice across sculpture, drawing, painting and writing sought to make visible the unseen forces she believed shaped the natural world. This is a rare chance to hear personal, first-hand insights into her life and creative journey, shared by her son Barrie, travelling from South Africa to join us.

What to expect

Taking place on the College's fourth floor and surrounded by Ethelwynne's remarkable artworks, this intimate conversation will explore her life, influences and artistic legacy. The conversation will include her striking paintings of devas, developed through her work with clairvoyant and writer Geoffrey Hodson in the mid-to-late 1930s, and later reproduced in his influential book The Kingdom of the Gods (1952). You will have the opportunity to view the exhibition up close and ask questions during the discussion.

Jacqui McIntosh is Curator and Archivist at The College of Psychic Studies, and co-curator of Ethelwynne M. Quail: The Kingdom of the Gods, alongside Simon Grant. Barrie Gasson is Ethelwynne M. Quail's son. Based in South Africa, he is joining us in London to offer a unique, personal perspective on her life and work that few others can share, making this conversation a truly special opportunity to encounter the artist beyond her paintings.
