Working with Umbanda Healing Spirits

In this experiential in-person workshop, you will work with Umbanda's healing entities – caboclos (forest healers), pretos‑velhos (ancestor spirits) and personal spirits – to channel for cura (healing and counsel) in a safe, structured way.

This workshop at The College of Psychic Studies is a casa de cura, or healing space, in which a Brazilian pai de santo (priest) will introduce Umbanda's way of working with healing entities. You will learn a new way to work and respectfully collaborate with spirit, complementing your own mediumship and healing practice.

This in-person workshop includes:

• Umbanda's origins and the role of the casa de cura as a protected space for spiritual healing
• A new 'dialect' of spirit work to integrate into your own work and shamanic journeys
• Comparing Umbanda and trance mediumship, highlighting consent, partnership and clear boundaries with the entity
• How the Umbanda medium 'rides' with a guide, paralleling shamanic journeying and power animals or teachers
• Sensing shifts in posture, breath and emotional tone that characterise Umbanda‑style incorporation, without forcing deep trance

Through meditation, you will journey with the shamanic drum to meet the Brazilian healing spirits. You will learn how to recognise them, discover their strengths, and work with them for healing. These spirits include:

• Pretos‑Velhos (elder healers)
• Caboclos (forest warriors and healers)
• Personal spirit alliances (existing guides, power animals and teachers)

You will also practice how to incorporate Umbanda healing spirits into your own work with clients, including ethical adaptations and a demonstration of an Umbanda-style consultation.
