Have you ever seen a movie that simply won't leave you alone – the kind that stays with you long after the credits roll, where a scene returns unexpectedly or a character continues to occupy your thoughts? This five-week self-discovery course explores the Self through character and film.
Certain storylines touch something deeply personal, symbolic or archetypal within us. Film has a unique capacity to engage us beyond logic and simple entertainment value. Rather than simply watching a story unfold, we find ourselves stepping into the scene and developing a relationship with it. It is in this liminal space that we have the opportunity to meet ourselves again and again in the world of film.
As Mark Wentworth puts it: "Sometimes we leave the cinema believing we have watched a film. Never quite considering that the character we are drawn to is drawn to us too."
What to expect
This course is a hero's journey. Each class blends group discussion, guided exploration and meditation to take you on a five-week path of self-growth and awareness. Rather than simply analysing story from the outside, you'll be guided into an experiential, imaginative space – stepping into scenes, exploring symbolic locations and even reshaping endings – to meet yourself more fully in the reflections that film offers.
This 5-week online course includes:
- Identifying the characters and storylines from film that recur and resonate in your life
- Exploring how film sets and locations reflect your own life's architecture
- Stepping into the role of a character who calls to you, to access their qualities and messages
- Reworking or "redirecting" a scene or ending to bring greater psychological completeness
- Honouring and releasing the characters who have served your growth
Who is this course for?
You don't need to be a film buff but you do need to be interested in understanding yourself on a deeper level. For anyone who has felt a film, scene or character stay with them long after watching, and is curious to explore what that connection might reveal about themselves, this course is for you.
Book now to join us for this five-week journey into character and film, and discover what the stories that stay with you have been trying to show you all along.
Meeting Ourselves In Film course syllabus
- Week 1 – The Magic Lantern
- The magic lantern was the first projected light source used to bring characters and images to life. Using the magic lantern metaphor we will bring to light the characters, and story lines from film that draw us back again and again. Who are these people?
- Week 2 – All Quiet On Set
- This week we step onto the set of the film which draws us, maybe a different location and a different film from last week. Set and scene locations speak to the soul in ways that people cannot. Here we get explore the foundational architecture of the how, what, where, and when of our life so far.
- Week 3 – Lights, Camera, Action!
- We have a character, we have a set, now it's time to step into role. This week we have the opportunity to tap into the qualities, the strengths, and the visions of the character that calls to us from inside the silver screen. What message do they bring, what can they show me about my life today?
- Week 4 – The Director's Cut
- Have you sometimes felt frustrated at a scene or somehow incomplete in the way a film ends? This week we have the opportunity to play director and change a scene or give a film ending that feels more complete. As we do so, we untie knots in the psyche leaving us feeling more complete with our own internal psychodramas. But, what about the characters, are they content?
- Week 5 – And the Oscar goes to…
- In this final week we give thanks to the characters that have served us well. With acknowledgement and honour we can allow them to step out of one character and into a new role and a new story. As we roll the credits of this course, maybe there's time for a preview to see what's currently in production and what's coming soon from psyche and soul films.
