This livestream talk examines the tradition of earth magic through the lens of art, from ancient practices to the modern day.

Some esoteric earth-based practices view the earth as a sacred mother and apply natural methods to discover resources, predict patterns of abundance and scarcity, and honour the earth as a living entity. These traditions may perceive an interconnected cosmos, where interaction with symbolic or divine entities will be called upon for protection, guardianship and to promote sustainable harmony, flourishing and vitality.

This artist's talk examines the tradition of a sacred ecological perspective from ancient art to the modern day. From ancient petroglyphs, geoglyphs and pictographs, this talk will unearth the history of ancient stone art in indigenous folkloric cultures.

The talk will look at examples from anonymous craftsmen, Minnie Evans, Ithell Colquhoun, Cecil Collins, Anne Brigman, Vali Myers, Monica Sjoo, Ana Mendieta and Nicole Frobusch, to name a few. This talk will include a few examples of paintings from the artist's own body of work and examine the significance of earth-based consciousness perspectives in art during the age of ecological collapse.

From Renaissance earth magic to 20th-century esoteric and visionary art, this talk will examine the work of a diverse range of artists, uncovering patterns and thematic echoes around the theme of natural magic. Book now.
