Meditative Powers of Sound and OM

Sonya Kumar & Daisy Bowman & Neil Kerr
Sunday 15 March 2020
1:00pm - 5:00pm

Many thousands of years ago, when ancient sages entered the deepest state of silence, they experienced a sound which they called the ‘sound of silence’. They realised that the closest sound to this silence, which a human body’s vocal system can produce, is the sound of OM.

OM chanting is a journey from the gross to the subtle, and ultimately to the subtlest aspect of reality. It is a journey from a noisy mind to a still mind. It is a movement towards stillness and it is an art of turning the gaze inward.

In this half day workshop, we will experience for ourselves the meaning and significance of the mantra OM and how it can take us to a deep space of inner stillness, which is amplified in the collective presence of each other.

Following these powerful meditations, we will share uplifting kirtans with musicians who have travelled deeply with sound.

Kirtans are the arrangement of mantras set to musical notes and rhythms to invoke deep feelings in us of pure divine love, celebration, remembrance and gratitude.

Through kirtan we can guide our awareness to a place that is quiet and still. Each time our wandering minds come back to the mantra, we take a step towards our inner self, to find new meaning, new dimensions, new experiences and a new colour to life.

Sonya Kumar

Sonya Kumar – 7 years of intense yoga practice and teacher training in the UK and India has led Sonya to teach this holistic yoga to all in workshops, classes and retreats. Parallel to her Yoga journey, Sonya has explored the effects of mantra chanting on the body mind connection. The chanting of the mantras in the form of devotional kirtan (music meditation) deeply resonates in her spiritual practice and she has become one of the few female mrdangam (Indian drum) players in the world. Sonya regularly shares Saadho kirtans in the UK, Europe and India, taking people on a journey to deep inner silence through mantra and kirtan. Over the past 5 years Sonya has travelled to India regularly to deepen her practice and to lead workshops and retreats on mantra movement and meditation. Together with friends in India and the UK she is building a community eco-system for spiritually aligned seekers which she is spearheading in the UK. Sonya was also a practicing commercial property lawyer in the UK before deciding to pour her full life energies into sharing body movement, mantra and meditation.
